thepartsadvisor answers the questions that start with a noise, a smell, a light on the dash or an MOT sheet full of advisories. What is it? Which part? Is it safe to drive? Will it pass?

We write for drivers in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland: British cars and makes, British words (bonnet, boot, tyres, number plates) and British rules, from the MOT to DVLA.

We’re not a garage, and we never see your car. We explain, so you know what you’re looking at and what to ask. For brakes, steering and tyres, or anything you’re unsure about, have a qualified mechanic check it.
